EnterpriseDB Discussion
Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting
|
I had
the opportunity to ask Andy Astor, the CEO and Co-founder of
EnterpriseDB, exactly what his goal, and what the company’s goal, is
for the database and the tools.
Andy’s
reply:
"At
EnterpriseDB, we are simply trying to build the database product
that enterprise-class organizations want for their mission-critical
applications."
"We
actually have a very simple - and open - strategy: We started with
PostgreSQL, which is already the world's best enterprise-class open
source database, and are adding 3 things to it: Oracle
compatibility, enhanced performance, and enterprise-class tools."
"To be
a little more specific:
Deep
and broad Oracle compatibility enables applications written for
Oracle to run unchanged on EnterpriseDB. This also means that people
who already know Oracle can use and develop applications for
EnterpriseDB with virtually no training.
Enhanced performance enables EnterpriseDB (and PostgreSQL) to
compete against the world's leading proprietary databases.
Enterprise-class tools provide robust development and management
capabilities to enterprise application developers and Remote DBAs."
"Our
strategy can be this simple because PostgreSQL is already such a
strong database product. It is far more advanced and full-featured
than MySQL and other open source databases, and has a 20-year
history of running world-class applications for large governmental
and commercial organizations."
"Five
years from now, I simply want the EnterpriseDB product set to be the
best enterprise database product available, and I hope our customers
love the product enough to make the company the leading enterprise
database vendor on the planet."
