Be Aware
of the Potential for Self-Inflicted Violence
A computer professional being fired may become
mentally and emotionally unstable in a very brief period of time. Such
distraught individuals may inflict violence against
themselves up to and including suicide.
The manager should pay close attention to what is
said or gestured by the fired employee. If he or she says something
similar to “I don’t know how I can go on without my job,” this person
is obviously in a bad state of mind and possibly contemplating hurting
themselves. These acts of violence may take
place at or away from work and may involve several individuals. If
such a statement is made by the terminated employee, the manager
should inquire if the individual is okay, and offer specific and
immediate alternatives for the person to seek professional help.
FAST FACT
According to the
Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses
(ASOII), non-fatal
workplace assaults are distributed almost equally between men and
women.
