The Ion for Oracle trend viewer
Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting |
There have been several third-party companies
developing graphical user interfaces to interface with STATSPACK data.
The premier product is Ion for Oracle.
Ion for Oracle allows Oracle
Remote DBAs to build graphical trend charts and generate alerts for more than
100 performance metrics for Oracle Server based on performance data
gathered by Oracle STATSPACK or AWR Utility and for custom statistics defined
by database administrator. The intent of Ion is to
provide a more convenient way to report and analyze performance
metrics gathered by STATSPACK and/or AWR.
The Ion Viewer allows you to see how
Oracle instance's performance metrics change with the course of time.
At a high level, the Ion for Oracle tool takes the performance data
stored in the Oracle STATSPACK tables and presents it as graphical
charts or trend reports. The Ion tool is also able to generate
alerts, store them in the database and notify a Remote DBA by e-mail service
if some performance metrics exceed alert thresholds set by the Oracle
Remote DBA.

Tuning an Oracle database has been likened to working on a
car while it flies down the highway at 70 miles per hour.
Thousands of transactions are processed every second
and it’s extremely difficult to isolate and repair an Oracle
performance problem. |
Oracle tuning takes years to master and the
internals of SQL optimization have become so complicated that only a
seasoned expert can make sense of Oracle tuning.
Enter Ion
for Oracle
Ion for Oracle is a revolutionary new tool that
encapsulates the tuning techniques used by the world’s top Oracle
tuning experts. Using
applied artificial intelligence, Ion for Oracle employs decision
support system technology to relieve you of the tedium of querying
dozens of cryptic internal tables, placing the salient data right at
your fingertips.
You can build STATSPACK charts both for
predefined set of statistics and for your own custom statistics. All
the predefined and custom statistics are grouped into categories, and
each of these can be plotted using the Ion GUI.
