In the early 1960s, corporations began to change their attitudes

considered a burden, a thing to be managed and controlled. However,
the widespread availability of commercial database management caused
corporations to rethink their attitudes about information.
Corporations began to consider their information to be an asset, an
asset which could be exploited to make better and faster decisions.
As most companies adopted database systems, reaction time to changes
in the marketplace dropped significantly, and companies had to be
able to consult their databases quickly to stay ahead of their
competition. By the 1970s, corporate databases were firmly
entrenched, and companies struggled to collect and disseminate their
