Using Object IDs (OIDs) in Oracle 8

Oracle Tips by Mike Ault

Introduction

In releases of Oracle previous to ORACLE8 the most complex identifier we had to deal with was the ROWID pseudo column. While the ROWID is still present in ORACLE8 (indeed, it has been expanded) it is no longer the ultimate identifier for rows in and ORACLE8 object, the new king of the hill is the Object Identifier or OID. In this paper I will present what an OID is and how they will be used in ORACLE8 for reference of rows in ORACLE8 objects.
