The Data Warehouse Development Life Cycle
The Data Warehouse Team
* Network Administrator--A network
administrator is usually a network engineer whose job is to ensure
that data is cleanly transported from the Oracle servers to the
client platforms. For many distributed Oracle data warehouses, the
scope of the data transport network may be worldwide and may also
involve Web-based data delivery techniques. As such, a network
administrator must be familiar with cross-domain data transport
(i.e., LU6.2 with TCP/IP), and they must be able to ensure that the
network does not become a bottleneck, especially when large amounts
of data are transported to the clients.
* Oracle Developers--Oracle developers are the programmers
who assist in the project by developing the data aggregation and
data summarization programs for the data warehouse. These
programmers should be well versed in all aspects of the Oracle
database, as well as Oracle parallel query techniques. In addition,
these programmers should be intimate with operating system language
interfaces, including Tcl, Perl, OraPerl, C, and so on.
* Statistician--A statistician is the one member of the data
warehouse development team that is assigned the task of translating
the end-user data analysis requirements into an operational method.
The statistician must be fluent in all areas of quantitative data
analysis techniques, including multivariate analysis (chi square),
forecasting, simulation, and hypothesis testing, as well as having
an intimate knowledge of computer-based statistical packages, such
as the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) or the Statistical Package
for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The statistician will work closely
with the data warehouse programmers to ensure that all data analysis
requirements are met.
