The Data Warehouse Development Life Cycle
Data Warehouse Project Tracking
For a data warehouse project, the savvy manager must be able to
track the project from many angles while ensuring that the
lower-level management produces complete project reporting
information.
Let’s start with the obvious. The project manager will need to
identify the major tasks that comprise the project implementation
and assign time durations, resources, and completion criteria
(quality checks) to each major task. For example, consider the task
duration table shown in Table 2.4.
TASK ID
TASK_NAME
Duration
Dependencies Skills Required
101
Extract Program
79 hours 98, 100
C++ Proficient
102
Load Program
28 hours 101, 95
VB Proficient
103
Report Menu Program 19 hours
37
HTML
104
Report Program
49 hours 98,
101 C++ Proficient
Table 2.4 A task duration table.
Here, you can see how this collection of tasks, resources, times,
and dependencies can be collected and graphically displayed. As
mentioned earlier, there are two major ways to display project
information: PERT and CPM.
